Absentee Voting

 

Any resident of Billings County is eligible to vote absentee in any election. The 1997 Legislative Assembly removed all restrictions concerning absentee voting. Qualified electors are no longer required to provide a reason for voting absentee in North Dakota.

A resident may apply for an absentee ballot at any time during the election year. An application for an absentee ballot may be obtained at the County Auditor’s Office, or can be downloaded and printed from the link below.

Voters must return a completed application to Billings County Auditor, PO Box 168, Medora ND 58645 or fax to 701-623-4761.

Upon receiving the completed application, we will send an absentee ballot.  Absentee ballots are expected to be available no later than May 1, 2008.

Absentee ballots must be returned to the Billings County Auditor's Office by 4 PM on June 9, 2008, or postmarked no later than June 9, 2008.

 

Billings County Precincts:

Medora Precinct - Polling Place - Courtroom, Courthouse in Medora - 495 4th St, Medora ND 58645 - Precinct includes Townships 137, 138, 139 and 140 Range 102; All of Township 141 Range 101 and 102; the south half of Township 142 Range 101 (sections 19 through 36); all of Township 142 Range 102; all the territory lying west of the Little Missouri River in Townships 143 and 144 Range 102; and the City of Medora.

Indian Springs Precinct - Polling Place - Prairie School Junior High (Old Glade School) - in Section 10 Township 142 Range 99 - 12793 20th St SW, Fairfield ND 58627 - Precinct includes Townships 141 and 142 Ranges 98 and 99; the north 1/2 of Township 141 Range100 (sections 1 through 18); Township 142 Range 100; the north 1/2 of Township 142 Range 101 (sections 1 through 18); Townships 143 and 144 Ranges 98 through 101; all territory lying east of the Little Missouri River in Townships 143 and 144 Range 102.

Fryburg Precinct - Polling Place - Billings County Fire Hall in Fryburg in Section 9, Township 139 range 100 - 3717 High Street, Fryburg North Dakota 58622 - Precinct includes Townships 137 through 140 Ranges 199 and 101; the south 1/2 of Township 141 Range 100 (sections 19 through 36)

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR VOTING

The County Auditor is the local election official for state wide and county elections.  The Secretary of State is the election official for the State of North Dakota and oversees the County Auditor in the conduct of elections.

To be a qualified voter in North Dakota you need to meet the following qualifications:

              1.  Must be a citizen of the United States

              2.  Must be at least eighteen years old

              3.  Must be a resident of North Dakota

              4.  Must have resided in the precinct at least thirty days next preceding any election

If a resident who otherwise meets the qualifications for voting in North Dakota moves from one precinct to another within thirty days preceding any election they are still qualified electors of the precinct they moved from.

North Dakota does not have voter registration, however, when you show up at the polls you may be challenged and be required to complete a voter affidavit certifying that you meet the qualifications to vote in that precinct.

The state is divided into forty-seven legislative districts. Billings County is in Legislative District 39.  Commissioners must live within the district they are running to serve in, but are elected by the county as a whole.

 

I.D. Requirements
  • Acceptable forms of identification must include a street address.
  • PO Boxes do not establish residency & CANNOT be accepted.

Acceptable forms of identification with residential addresses are:

              •  Valid Drivers License

              •  Valid State Identification Card

              •  Valid Federally Issued Identification Card:

                            1.  Passport 

                            2.  Agency Identification Card

              •  Valid Tribal Government Issued Identification Card

              •  Valid Student Identification Card

              •  Valid United States Military Identification Card

              •  Utility bill dated 30 days prior to election day with name and residential address

              •  Change of address verification letter from the US Postal Service

  If you do not have one of the forms of identification listed above, You still have the right to vote if:

              1.  An election poll worker is able to vouch for your identity and residence.

              2.  You complete a Voter's Affidavit on which you certify, under oath, your identity and that you are a

                    resident within the precinct you are wishing to vote in.
